Cyclist picture leaves drivers fuming
A PICTURE taken of a group of cyclists along a Sydney road has provoked furious reactions from motorists because of one glaring detail.
The photo was captured by a driver in Captain Cook Drive, Cronulla on Sunday and was shared to Facebook group Perth — Have a whinge.
The picture shows more than 10 cyclists riding three abreast along the road and taking up a full lane.
But it was their complete disregard for the designated cycling lane right next to them that had people fired up.
“Note the bike lane to their left,” the caption read.
Drivers and cyclists alike shared their fury over the picture, with some calling for harsher penalties for those who don’t follow the rules.
“They need to be made to use the bike lanes where provided, and be fined for not riding within there provided lane,” one person said.
“As a cyclist this pisses me off … we have our own lane and I doubt they’re matching the speed of the cars going by,” another wrote.
One added: “And they wonder why drivers have issues with them … How does the 1 metre rule work when they are riding like that.”
But there was one cyclist who defended the actions of his fellow riders, saying sometimes it was unsafe to use the bike lane.
“Cyclists are also car and truck drivers. We pay our licence fees. The cycle path is not safe because cars/trucks often drive over it,’ she said.
“The safest place to be is smack in the middle of the road. Get used to it. What’s the damn hurry?”
